Beer Brats
Classic beer-simmered bratwurst finished on the charcoal grill for a perfect brown exterior.
Ingredients
- • 2-3 cans beer
- • 1 large or 2 small onions, roughly chopped
- • 1 can baked beans (optional)
Instructions
- 1 Place brats, beer, and roughly chopped onions in a crockpot or stovetop pot
- 2 Simmer on low for 1-3 hours (minimum 1 hour, maximum 3 hours), ensuring mixture doesn't boil dry
- 3 Prepare charcoal grill by placing newspaper at bottom of chimney starter and filling with charcoal
- 4 Light newspaper and let coals heat for about 20 minutes until they have gray edges
- 5 Arrange coals in single layer on grill
- 6 Grill brats with lid open for about 3 minutes per side, turning frequently to prevent burning
- 7 Optional: Place can of baked beans in small cast iron skillet and warm over coals alongside brats
- 8 - Brats are fully cooked after simmering; grilling is just for browning and flavor
- 9 - Keep grill lid open while cooking brats
- 10 - Use only one layer of coals on the grill
