Beer Brats

Classic beer-simmered bratwurst finished on the charcoal grill for a perfect brown exterior.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 cans beer
  • 1 large or 2 small onions, roughly chopped
  • 1 can baked beans (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1 Place brats, beer, and roughly chopped onions in a crockpot or stovetop pot
  2. 2 Simmer on low for 1-3 hours (minimum 1 hour, maximum 3 hours), ensuring mixture doesn't boil dry
  3. 3 Prepare charcoal grill by placing newspaper at bottom of chimney starter and filling with charcoal
  4. 4 Light newspaper and let coals heat for about 20 minutes until they have gray edges
  5. 5 Arrange coals in single layer on grill
  6. 6 Grill brats with lid open for about 3 minutes per side, turning frequently to prevent burning
  7. 7 Optional: Place can of baked beans in small cast iron skillet and warm over coals alongside brats
  8. 8 - Brats are fully cooked after simmering; grilling is just for browning and flavor
  9. 9 - Keep grill lid open while cooking brats
  10. 10 - Use only one layer of coals on the grill
